Welcome

Steve & Stevie

This is my daughter Stevie.  In a nut shell, Stevie is a cross between Elly May Clampett and Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island.

She's beautiful, talented, and sweet when she wants to be but watch out, she'll put a boot in your butt just the same and laugh while you squirm.  She's never met a stranger and is loyal to a fault.

She's her Daddy's Girl!

Welcome to the new site for Daddy's Girl competitive cooking team.  DG is a partnership between a father and his daughter with the support of their family.  I also have two sons that have endured my love of cooking barbecue and now that they have both escaped to TAMU and UTT, its just Stevie and I with mom on the sidelines enjoying the peace and quiet.

Just Some Thoughts About Barbecue Memories

When I was a kid I remember my dad and his friends frying fish, making chili, and cooking brisket or barbecue in general.  I never questioned why the beer went in the foil wrapped brisket or why there were so many steps to making chili.  Just a quick question.  Why do you have to turn chili with a boat paddle to make it taste good?  Everything revolved around oak and mesquite fires, sweet tea, beer, foil, salt, pepper, some onion and jalapenos.  I guess it is still close to  the same today.

However, like time itself, I too have changed.  I have spent years watching, learning, and practicing this art.  I cooked competitively, owned a barbecue restaurant, fed MY barbecue to the governor of Texas, Rick Perry himself.  Now, today, I am slowing down, returning to the simple pleasures of life.

So, with all that said, I have decided to return to the barbecue circuit with the help of my daughter, Stevie.  And...because women always seem to get their way, she has named the team and I guess she is making the rules.  She reminds me of her mother when we were her age.

To keep things simple and let her learn the ropes, I have decided to forgo the traditional pull behind offset smoker and opt for a less complicated and more compact setup featuring a few Big Green Eggs with Guru's to match.

Get ready, it may take a few tries to get coordinated, but we will be standing on that podium before long in 2011!
